Sea Song
Inspired by "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Colerige Taylor and an archaeological find from the SS Medina
During WW1 the SS MEDINA was used as a passenger cargo ship between India and England. On her final voyage, she was carrying many passengers from India. They disembarked safely in Devon, but as the SS Medina continued her journey to London on 28 April 1917, she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, just of the Devon coast at Start Point.
A recent dive on the wreck recovered a copy of the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and it is this "find" that led to "Sea Song".
The painting depicts scenes from both "The Rime" and SS Medina's last voyage and a careful search will reveal the Mariner, the wedding guests, a sea snake and, of course, the albatross.
